the family of a jehovah's witness who died after repeatedly refusing blood transfusions can't sue the hospital where doctors begged for a chance to save her life, a state appeals court ruled.. the case, outlined in an opinion by superior court judge jacqueline o. shogan, involves a convergence of religion, medicine and the law.. its focus is on what happened before terri seels-davila, a jehovah's witness missionary, died after giving birth at hahnemann university hospital in philadelphia in november 2010.. seels-davila, who had been serving on mission with her husband in nicaragua, chose hahnemann because of its "bloodless medicine" program for patients who won't agree to having blood transfusions, including jehovah's witnesses, shogan noted.

the treatment plan for seels-davila called for recycling her own blood back into her system.. yet that proved to be inadequate when complications of her delivery required seels-davila to deliver by cesarean section.

I mentioned it on the other post about this case, but I did not know cell saver machines stripped blood of its coagulating effects. In the end, the blood they salvaged and re-introduced, could not effectively clot. This is why in the end, she slowly died over the course of a couple days.

Had whole blood of the main "component" with clotting factors been introduced, it is very likely she would have survived.

It seems that she was an american citizen, serving in Nicaragua, who married a man from that country (since an emergency visa was something the doctors were willing to arrange).

It was heartbreaking to hear of the medical staff trying everything they could, begging the family for relief. Horrific.

Of course if you listen to the apologists.....this kind of thing really doesn't happen anymore right?

july 17, 2017 the supreme court of russia has missed the last chance to restore law and justice for the 175,000 russian citizens professing the religion of jehovah's witnesses.

it took less than an hour of the meeting a panel of three supreme court judges, to leave unchanged the decision taken earlier by the judge yuri ivanenko, the liquidation and ban any and all registered organizations of the religion.since there is no more effective domestic remedies, the believers will appeal to the european court of human rights and other international organizations.. *note: as reported by the jworg source, jw-russia.org.

I don't think the lawyer even knows what Physiology is. But hell......if physiological studies have been done on JW's specifically I would love to know how their organism differs in use. Perhaps the uncanny ability to subjugate certain brain cells that would otherwise be in use?

I just saw that three clerical members of his staff were i fact Jehovahs Witnesses.

they were denied using a particular expert witness because essentially they said he had no real expertise in "bloodless medicine" and didn't even "have a basic grasp of what it entails". Dr Ronald Paynter. I can't help but wonder if he is a JW.

But they sued this hospital for essentially not properly staffing its bloodless medicine program? For real?

The expert that was allowed is Dr Minda Green, and her birthday cake on facebook reveals she is not a JW.

That was heartbreaking to read. I did learn a few things.

First I did not know that the filtration process involved in the cell saver process strips the blood of platlets and any coagulation ability.

Also they transfused a liter of Albumin. That seems like a lot! to make a liter of Albumin i can only imagine how many peoples donated blood would make that up. Albumin is only 2% of whole blood volume at best. So I suppose 50 peoples donated blood was used to make this one liter of Albumin, rather than her just accepting ONE PERSONS BLOOD to help get her out of the woods.

The surgery was complicated, and it seems like the doctor might have made an error with the odd shape of the side of her uterus. But not having the tools at their disposal to help her.....can you imagine the scenario?

they used Albumin, anticoagulants, multiple medications and volume expanders, many of which contained parts of blood. This makes no sense! The bleeding could have been stopped through blood being infused with its normal clotting factor most likely.

Even the JW's own expert said a blood transfusion would most likely have saved her life.

If they ever find out this doctrine is nonsense......can you imagine the crushing guilt they would feel?

There is really no reason to disassociate. Think twice about that. 10 years from now the unintended consequence could be your older sister shunning you to be technically faithful to that rule. If you just leave and stop attending, they can't really do anything to you, and you can fade out of their memory.

Are you in the US? Are there a large contingency of JW's around you? Are your parents baptized?

I didn't read quite all of this, but I have advise regardless.

You are in a mental state of flux. Having your entire belief system blow up in front of you, with everything that entails, is a ball of yarn not easily unraveled.

So you should do the same thing you would do if you suddenly inherited a million dollars.......nothing.

The reason financial experts (that aren't trying to take your money) would tell you to do nothing with a windfall, is because people make the greatest mistakes right after receiving it. Its almost like the feel they have to do something.

You don't have to do anything. Start over. Do you believe in God? Why or why not? Do you think he is a benevolent and loving creator, or a spark of life that just kind of pushed the snowball down the hill so to speak. if you believe in a benevolent creator, then you have some details to work out, like why does he allow suffering (not because of some cosmic bet with Satan I hope....otherwise he is probably an a**hole). Do you think he has revealed himself in any "holy" books? Have you read any holy books? Have you read any skeptics books or Atheists books?

Maybe its good to just do nothing, not feel that you HAVE TO believe something else right away.

One of the most important things I learned as I left, is that its ok, and really even humble, to simply say I DON'T KNOW.

the conversation soon got to spiritual subjects, this elder is company man all through and side kick well he's learning the ropes.

bang mentioned snake antivenin, blood factions, then big geoffrey jackson saying presumptuous, then vin toole in the arc saying he had never heard of theocratic warfare.

then told how god made exceptions to the rules on blood when soldiers ate unbled meat.

Glad you are ok on the snake bite, and yes that is very interesting about the horse blood component to the antivenom. You mentioned something about soldiers eating unbled meat. Can you elaborate on your point there? Are you talking about 1 Samuel when the men out of hunger start eating raw meat...and they basically get a slap on the wrist?

That is absolutely hilarious.

But.....did I read something right? Did the attorney claim there are studies showing that JW's are truthful and that truth comes "easy to them"?

You have got to be kidding me. I wonder where I can find these studies.

Jehovah's people are not happy people

i finally stopped attending the meetings about 4 months go.

i won't be going back - ever.. but i've decided the best reply to the watchtower is to be happy and i do try to be happy every day even thought i wasted my entire life on this religion.

i cherish every day, practice mindfulness and do my best to be content with the life i have.. it is only now that i see that most jws i know are deeply unhappy people.

In their defense.....A LOT of people are depressed and dealing with it medically. I would guess it might be slightly above the average, but probably not as much as we think.

The reality is that the teaching that works its way into your mind as a JW is that you are never doing enough, even as a JW, you are not guaranteed to not be slaughtered by Jesus, and between the end of the world, and the cognitive dissonance required to be both loving to others on the outside AND be begging God to come and kill everyone in the world.....how could you possibly have a healthy view of the world, yourself, and others?

The branch is obsessed with "keeping the friends busy". They have stated this many times. I don't know if they sincerely think being busy is the cure for this "horrific world we live in", or if the busy part is a tool of control. I suspect its a little bit of both.

july 19, 2017the jehovah's witnesses expressed its plans to appeal to the european court of human rights in strasbourg after the russian supreme court upheld a ruling that banned the sect and declared it as an "extremist" organization.

......for more press. They forgot to add they plan to appeal to get the word out and receive more empathy from other nations, particularly where they might be under investigation, or perhaps having their charitable status up for consideration.

Russia could seriously care less about the European court of human rights.
